Júlia Papp: Image and Remembrance – The Battle of Mohács and King Louis II of Hungary in the Fine Arts

Although the Battle of Mohács as a historical event, and its location as a site of historical memory hold a pivotal role in the Hungarian national consciousness, the topic has received limited attention in art history writing. Due to the upcoming quincentenary of the battle, it is particularly relevant to provide a comprehensive exhibition of artistic representations of this tragic event, as well as to systematically collect the artworks depicting the battle and the individuals involved, especially King Louis II. However, this volume addresses a broader theme: it explores the European and Hungarian perception of the Ottomans in the contemporary era, the relationship between Christian Europe and the Islamic Ottoman Empire, battle painting, and artistic propaganda.

Júlia Papp, PhD, is a senior research fellow at the HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities (HUN-REN RCH). She participated in the programme titled "Mohács 1526-2026 – Reconstruction and Remembrance," led by the consortium of the Research Centre for the Humanities and the University of Pécs. Since then, she has been involved in collecting and organising both domestic and foreign representations of the Battle of Mohács and King Louis II from the 16th to the 19th century.
