Inalcik, Halil–Radushev, Evgeni–Altuğ, Uğur: Ottoman Military and Administrative Order on the Lower Danube during the Time of Mehmed the Conqueror. The Ottoman Tax Registers of Nicopolis, Vidin and Braničevo/Fatih Sultan Mehmed Döneminde Tuna Boyunda Osma

In this volume – which is part of a publishing project regarding the tax registers (tahrir defterleri) compiled under the reigns of Murad II and Mehmed the Conqueror (1421–1481) – we are releasing the tax registers of three important regions in the Lower Danube area, which we acquired from the Ottoman archives in Istanbul and Sofia. These are two summary or synoptic (icmal) tax registers of Nicopolis (1470s) and Vidin (1467–1468), and one detailed (mufassal) tax register of Braničevo (1467–1468). These three regions were the centers of the Ottoman costal fortification system on the Lower Danube. In this geographically integrated region, the process of the Ottoman conquest differed greatly from region to region, despite their proximity.
